Retail Training Project

This program was created by Basia Klein, Brian Head Resort Retail Supervisor, in efforts to connect all the information included in the 2016/2017 season retail training program.

The goal of the training program is to educate all new, incoming retail associates on the various winter products and product features in order to properly prepare them for the on coming season. The program is designed to relay as much product information as possible in a short amount of time, with interactive notes, videos, and cheat-sheets.

Home: Portfolio

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The purpose of this training program is help organize a successful and educational training program in order to train new, in coming employees on the various features of the products we carry in Brain Head Resort retail shops. In attending the 2016 SIA snow sport industry show this past December, I was allowed the privilege to catch a training seminar on how to maximize sales and efficiency through video, and interactive retail training. Through this seminar, I devised a retail-training plan, in coordination with my manager, in order to solve our problem of quickly and efficiently training new, in coming employees in our extensive winter product features as to maximize sales this winter season. This particular training plan includes interactive notes, product-related games, information cheat sheets, and video homework. Considering the amount of information, we have to go over in our training program, my manager and me estimated that the program will take at; least 3 weekends (6 days) to complete. However, because of time restrictions, we condensed the material into 5 days.

PROJECT DETAILS

The main objective of this project was to increase product education and training efficiency, by designing an interactive retail training program. I created videos, interactive notes pages, games, and cheat sheets in order to increase the amount of product information new, in coming employees were able retain. Through this educational program, retail management has seen new employees display a better understanding of product knowledge and as a direct result an increase in sales profits

PROJECT REFLECTION

I took this on as a personal project to both satisfy a class requirement and to propel my career forward. I never planned on creating a project from my retail work at Brain Head and to be truthful, the concept of an entertaining training program fell into my lap after attending a lecture about efficient training in winter sport products. regardless of how I developed this project, seeing it come to life and actually achieve managements goal or relaying product information more efficiently is an accomplishment I plan to showcase on my resume. although the project was not implemented as planned and one of the days had to be moved, the overall purpose of the project has been well-achieved and new employees have easily learned about our products.

Brian Head Retail Training Program

My project we designed to create a fun, interactive way of relaying the vast product information new, incoming employees at Brain Head retail have to learn. A reoccurring issue in the Brian Head retail department in past seasons, was the inability for new, incoming employees to successfully learn all the vast product information in the small amount of time that we have to train them. As a direct result, customers were receiving false information on products, many new sales associates were failing to close sales, and managers had to spend valuable time reteaching product features. As a future retail manager and future leader, I took it upon myself to create a training program that was entertaining so employees could remember the information with ease. Brian Head retail wants their associates ready from day one with all product information down cold as to make sure customers are satisfied and safe on the mountain.
The ultimate goal of this project to to maximize sales by increasing the amount of product knowledge retained by new, incoming employees. With the help of Brian Head Resort's management team, I successfully created an entertaining training program that included interactive, fill-in-the-blank notes, product-related games, and skits/videos to create a fun way of remembering certain product features. Considering the amount of information, we have to go over in our training program, my manager and me estimated that the program will take at; least 3 weekends (6 days) to complete. However, because of time restrictions, we condensed the material into 5 days. Through this educational program, retail management has seen new employees display a better understanding of product knowledge and as a direct result an increase in sales profits.

Inspiration for my project came from my attendance at a retail-related seminar at the SIA snow sports trade show in Denver, Colorado. The seminar was about maximizing retail profits through training employees in a fun-entertaining way. The seminar's example was an online retail training video company who specialized in creating product related training videos for employees to view at their leisure. Since I am not a video production major, I developed my own way of relaying product information in an entertaining way using Microsoft publisher and management-teaching tactics I learned in school. Rather than relaying of just videos I created entertaining educational opportunists using other methods of teaching.

In creating my project, I met many challenges. The first challenge came about in planing the training days. as the deadline for opening day was moved up, and employee hiring pushed back till the end of October, me and my managers found ourselves pushing six days of information into just five days. My second challenge was in finalizing the notes. My boss lacked the proper program to correct and print the interactive notes as as a result we had to print the originals at SUU and copy it in order to duplicate it. My final and most challenging issue in working on the project was information. My managers and I diagreed at times, what information should be included and what was irrelevant which led to day-of corrections

Other than myself and my professional career, this project also benefited the Brian Head retail department. Not only did employees learn and retain a lot more information through my program, but they also felt more confident in product knowledge. I also have provided the frame work for training programs years to come. My bosses watched my process and could easily duplicate what I've done. this program will also benefit the department as a whole as I expect our sales numbers to increase over our last years goal. Achieving this goal would then benefit the entire resort as not only our retail store becomes well-known, but the excess money could go to new lifts, and building needs.

This project also benefits me both professionally, and as a future manager. Professionally, this project is an excellent example of my retail product knowledge abilities, my abilities as a managers, and my abilities as a leader. I have used this project to further my career in the snow sports industry by including it on my resume along with a link to my digital portfolio. After I graduate in December, I plan on using this project to help me obtain a position as a retail manger in Denver, Colorado. As a future manger, this project was a learning experience for me. I got to witness first hand how to properly relay vast product information to my employees in a way so that they will want to remember.

Retail Interactive Training Program Increases New Employee-Product Knowledge & Maximize Sales

NOVEMBER 9TH, 2016 BRIAN HEAD, UTAH

In receiving a diploma from Southern Utah University, students must first complete a university project in which they provide a free service to the community that demonstrates skills and ablates learned at SUU. The best way to approach this project is for a student to create something that they can showcase on a resume or to future employers. As such I, Basia Klein a business management major at SUU and full time retail supervisor at Brian head resort, took it upon myself to create a project I could showcase in my resume. After receiving inspiration from a seminar at the SIA snow sports trade show, I developed a retail training project that would invoke entertaining methods of learning in order to increase the amount of knowledge new employees can retain in order to maximize sales. As I am a business major, I was able to use my Microsoft publisher skills, leadership skills, and newly learned managerial skills to create fun interactive note pages, skits, and videos about the vast product information new, incoming Brian Head retail employees must learn for the upcoming season.

The 2016/2017 season will mark my 3rd season working retail at Brain Head resort and my first complete season as a retail supervisor. As such, creating my interactive notes with completely accurate information in a format easy to comprehend was easy after I collaborated with my fellow managers. I met with the head of the Brian Head retail department and her assistant manager in order to collaborate the best approach to presenting the information and what information should be included. The managers and I had originally planned on spreading out the information over six days however, because of time constraints; we had to condense the material into just five days. As the program continued, we found that condensing the information wasn’t the worst thing to happened and it gave us the opportunity to eliminate useless information. The overall response to my trying program was a positive one as all new incoming employees felt like my interactive notes were easy to understand, helpful in retain information, and will be useful in the future when they need to refresh on product information.

This press release is all in part to the EDGE leadership engagement center. Located in the Sharwan Smith student center, the leadership engagement center is a student resource dedicated to providing students with the skills, abilities, and assets to become great leaders of today. As such, I chose to base my university project from this student center because of my goals in becoming a manger and leader after I graduate. The leadership engagement center turned out to be the perfect resource for my project. I was able to not only obtain a last minute classroom using my resources at the center, but I also learned how to create a professional website from taking the leadership engagement center class.

In conclusion, this project has become an excellent method of showcasing my abilities as a leader and future retail manager. I have been able to show my skills in merchandising, product knowledge, and general retail knowledge. I also have founded a new method of educating new, incoming employees by using the four methods of teaching and educating. I feel as though this new skill and training process I have developed is something I could carry on to other retail companies I may work for in the future. Furthermore, I have learned a great deal about the entire management, new employee education process, an invaluable skill I am excited to bring with me after I graduate and move into my career. ###

BHR Retail Training Program

PRESENTATION

For my university project, I created a retail training program to help the Brain Head Resort retail department increase new employee product knowledge. My inspiration for this project came from a retail seminar I attended at the SIA snow sports trade show in Denver, Colorado. This particular seminar discussed ways to increase new employee product knowledge and maximize sales through the use of interactive training. After gathering inspiration form this seminar, then pulling skills from my education in business management, and then collaborating with my boss and manager at Brian head resort, Sarah Miller, i created a training program that could relay the fast product information new, incoming employees have to learn in a fun interactive, entertaining way.

PRESENTATION CONTINUED: THE PROGRAM

In coordinating an entire department's training program, I knew I would have to be flexible from the beginning. At first I created a training program that was six days long. me and the department head decided that it would take six days to relay all the information to the new employees. However, things did not work out this way as we found ourselves approaching deadlines quicker than anticipated forcing us to condense the material into just five days. Luckily these changes were fairly easy to make and in the end our new employees said they enjoyed our training experience. I provided our new employees with interactive note pages, fun entertaining skits and plays about product information, and cheat sheets so that they could look back and refresh on the material as need be. 11 out of 12 retail employees said the notes were easy to use and were just simple enough to remember. Overall I feel like my training program was a success and that the retail department can expect to see and increase in employee product knowledge from last year which will contribute to an increase in sales as well.

PRESENTATION REPORT REFLECTION

I chose to do a presentation of my work for my goal is to keep this project as professional as possible in the hopes that I can showcase it to future employers. In displaying my project in a presentation format on my website, I have laid the ground work for my future self to showcase this project in the right light using the right verbiage to future employers. As I have worked in retail for five years now, I have had a goal of using my hard work to secure me a job as a retail manager after college. As such, I have used every aspect of my mandatory university project to showcase the skills I have learned in retail and while attending school at SUU. With the success of my project and graduation steady approaching I feel as though my goals of the project will help me achieve my overall goal of becoming a retail manager after college.

How to Create an Interactive Retail Training Program That Will Help Increase Employee Product Knowledge & Maximize Sales

INSTRUCTIONS

Home: Experience

STEP ONE

First thing to consider in creating your own retail-training program is the skills and abilities you have to create such a program. The training program needs to incorporate not only a fun interactive way to engage the participants but it also needs to include your enthusiasm. Videos, fill I the blank notes, skits, plays, cheat sheets, demos, brand reps, ect are all excellent ways to deliver the product information to new employees in a fun entertaining way. For example, I chose to incorporate fill-in-the-blank notes, skits, cheat sheets, demos, and brand reps into my training program.

STEP TWO

Second step in creating a training program is planning. Planning early on can save you later from deadlines. Before you can even decide what information to include in the program, it is important to plan out when you will present the information. In this step you’ll need to group product information into simple time slots to present it in. no matter how long or how many days the training may seem, it will always be worth it if employees leave the program feeling confident.

STEP THREE

The third step in creating a training program is deciding what information to include. It is important to keep in mind that NOT ALL INFORMATION IS RELEVANT and there for including non-essential information can over complicate the program. When deciding what information is important to follow the KISS method: keep it simple stupid. A simple program is easily understood and better remembered.

STEP FOUR

The fourth step is a brainstorm. In this step it is important to get creative and find ways to relate product information to funny sayings, slogans, skits, pictures, ect. This step, although simple, is vital to the process of convey information to the new employees. You wan the information to be exciting and sometimes that is really hard when there are a lot of product features to communicate. So put on your creative brain and find funny, entertain ways to relate the product information to employees so that they will remember.

STEP FIVE

Step five is pretty easy; it involves putting steps one through four together and creating your finished product. The finished training program should include a schedule, at least two fun entertaining mediums of relating product information, and an overview of the information covered for managerial purposes.

INSTRUCTION REFLECTION

I chose to create instructions on how to create a retail training program as my second report because I felt I would be the best method of properly showcasing what I can do for future employers. These instructions are an excellent example of how I can duplicate the same retail training program for other retail companies. This helps me achieve the larger goal of my retail training program of obtaining a retail management position after I graduate. I purposefully chose to create a retail training program as my university project so that I could have an example of my work to show potential employers. I believe my program can be easily translated into another retail company's products which is an asset other retail manager applicants may not have.
